With the NFL season coming up, the Coach of the Year betting props offer a potentially high reward at a low risk.

Recent Past NFL Coach of the Year Winners:

  • 2022: Brian Daboll, Giants
  • 2021: Mike Vrabel, Titans
  • 2020: Kevin Stefanksi, Browns
  • 2019: John Harbaugh, Ravens

The favorites for 2023 with odds courtesy of FanDuel:

  • Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions (+1000)

After going 3-13-1 record in his first season, Campbell led the Lions to a 9-8 record in 2022. Detroit now comes into 2023 as the favorite to win the NFC North, and Campbell is favored to win coach of the year. The drawback here on Campbell for bettors is that with expectations being so much higher this season, it may take 12 wins or more for Campbell to grab this award.

  • Sean Payton, Denver Broncos (+1400)

Payton is returning to the NFL after a one-year hiatus, and he will be tasked with turning around the Denver Broncos’ offense. Before stepping away from the Saints, Payton had five straight winning seasons as a head coach. The Broncos only won five games in 2022, and given Payton’s track record, he is an extremely attractive betting option.

  • Arthur Smith, Atlanta Falcons (+1400)

Smith will be looking to lead the Falcons to their first playoff appearance since 2017, and if he doesn’t, this could be his last season in Atlanta. The NFC South is not very strong, and the Falcons upgraded their roster after going 7-10 last season. If Smith can get them to the postseason, he would be a deserving Coach of the Year winner.

Sleepers to watch:

  • Mike McDaniel +2,000

Mike McDaniel led the Dolphins to the playoffs in his first season as head coach in 2022, but sharing a division with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets leaves plenty of room for both attention and to impress voters.

  • Sean McVay +3,000

McVay took home the coach of the year honor in 2017 after he inherited a team that had gone 4-12 the previous season and went 11-5 in his first season as a head coach. After winning Super Bowl LVI, McVay’s Rams only went 5-12 last season. Los Angeles has lost several significant players, especially on defense, and the national expectations for this team are low. If McVay can lead this team back to the playoffs, he will receive most of the praise and be a very attractive option for voters.
