Rockies: Freeland (5-5, 3.43 ERA) Reds: DeSclafani (First MLB start since 2016)

Anthony DeSclafani will make his first start for the Reds since 2016 when he posted a 9-5 record with a 3.28 earned run average and 1.22 WHIP. DeSclafani, who has been battling back from injuries, has made four starts between the AA and AAA levels this season. At the minor league level, DeSclafani is 0-3 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.19 WHIP this season.
The Reds are 2-5 in their last seven games, despite hitting .294 as a team over that stretch. You would think the Reds should be happy to be back home after playing 16 out of their last 23 games on the west coast; however, good home cooking has been few and far between for the Reds this season, who have a 9-19 record at Great American Ball Park this season.
The total in this game is currently set at 9 runs. The Reds are just 4-16 at home this season when the over/under run total has been set at either 9 or 9.5.
The total has only been set at 9 or 9.5 runs for one Rockies road game this season, and the Rockies did win that game.
The Rockies will be looking for projected starter Kyle Freeland to end the team’s current four-game losing streak. Freeland is 4-1 with a 2.56 earned run average and 1.14 WHIP over his last five starts. Freeland, however, is just 1-1 with a 6.55 earned run average in two career starts against the Cincinnati Reds with both starts coming in 2017.
The Rockies are 19-13 on the road this season and currently one game out of first place in a tight National League West, where all five teams are presently with-in five games of each other.
The Rockies are 2-1 against the Reds so far this season.
I do expect the Reds to score a few runs in this game, but overall I expect for Kyle Freeland, the Rockies bats, and bullpen to be a better overall package than Anthony DeSclafan and the Reds bullpen.
Long term, if DeSclafan can return to his 2016 form, he will really help the Reds rotation, but the Rockies will be a tough match-up for him here.
